The Only Custom Alternating Wheelchair Cushion That Actively Promotes Circulation to Treat and Prevent Pressure Sores

Uncategorized pressure sore relief, wheelchair cushion, wheelchair cushions

Aquila Corporation is the manufacturer of the ONLY custom alternating wheelchair cushion that actively promotes circulation to treat and prevent pressure sores all day, every day.  We have been growing and improving for 20 years. We know that our wheelchair cushions work and the studies and clinical data we possess backs us up their effectiveness.

We often get questions about tilt in space; “I have tilt in space, why would I need an alternating cushion when I can just tilt.”  When you have the tilt in space option, that is great, the chance of shear and sliding etc. is eliminated.  But all you did was transfer most of your weight to different parts of the posterior, the coccyx and lower back, where again, no circulation or stimulation is taking place.  This leads to the likelihood of developing a pressure sore.

If our wheelchair cushion was under you, even during tilt, the circulation and offloading under the coccyx still occur.

Did you know that each cushion is purpose built – from the very base to the very top layer and every layer in between?  Every move our team makes in creating a cushion is a thought-out decision based on our client and their needs.  We look at body weight, existing pressure sores, diagnosis, possible offloading, bladder sizes, bladder shapes, bladder locations and then programmed to offer the client 3 firmness preferences to choose from regarding how much air is going to be placed into the bladders.  Each of these settings is based on their own body weight, and regardless of the setting, will alternate air bladders every 60 seconds.

Any therapist who cannot understand the concept of this cushion compared to a ROHO, Star, gel or any other cushion that is static, needs to take another look at the Aquila Seating Systems. They need to ask themselves one question.  What is the number one cause of pressure injuries?  I will give the answer, it is constant unrelieved pressure to skin and tissue.  Skin and tissue need blood flow to remain healthy and a static cushion cannot, and will never, deliver that.  They need to ask themselves, why do Physicians put people on alternating mattresses to heal a wound or after surgical repair? The concepts are the same thing, but the Aquila wheelchair cushion is better in two extremely important ways.

1. We will have the client OUT OF BED.  The view is much better, life can go on, we can go to work and be with friends, and families!  2. We will OFFLOAD under the injury while the client is sitting up. There will NOT be an air bladder under the wound causing upward pressure, yet the rest of the cushion will be alternating every 60 seconds promoting circulation throughout the entire posterior. Those are two big differences.  The constant upward pressure from the static cushion and the inability or worrying about performing pressure lifts and weight shifts is gone.  The whole REASON the client got a sore in the first place, constant unrelieved pressure, is gone.  Get rid of cushions that are not actively working for you!  Get rid of cushions that are not custom programmed for you.
